Risks and Complications

Each and every option on cosmetic procedures has its own risks of potential complications that vary with the procedure. While major complications and bad results are very rare, they still can occur even under the most expert care. Most problems fortunately are minor and either resolve spontaneously with time or require minor revisions to correct. Even these are infrequent, but are best handled when there is open communication, patience, trust, and respect that is mutually shared between the patient and physician.

Facial Plastic Surgery

As a surgeon and physician, my primary goal is to have happy, healthy patients who are happy with me and the results I get for them. I can predict and usually produce good and great results, but I cannot promise them. I can promise to be totally honest in my recommendations for what I think is best for them and do my best to accomplish that goal. Included with descriptions I have written on specific procedures are before and after photographs of some of my patients to illustrate results.

No one “needs” cosmetic surgery, but an improved appearance often boosts the self-esteem and frequently one’s confidence in interacting with others. As we are constantly brainwashed by retouched photos in magazines as well as movie stars and models paid millions to diet, workout and look good it’s hard not to be critical when looking in the mirror. And as a society obsessed by physical appearance, first impressions do influence others. So what is a reasonable approach to considering cosmetic surgery?

First of all, if you are happy with how you look and how you think others perceive you, you do not need cosmetic surgery. Some of us, however, feel that some aspect of our facial appearance distracts from what we and others see. It is when that distraction can be significantly improved that cosmetic surgery should be considered.

For younger people, it is usually protruding ears, a recessed chin, or a large nose on an otherwise attractive face that can be brought into better harmony with the overall appearance. Unfortunately, children and teenagers can be hypercritical and sometimes even cruel about appearances. Fortunately these are easily correctable with appropriate surgery and are often associated with improved self-esteem and self-confidence.

In older individuals, natural aging is the major factor adversely affecting appearance. Eyelids become bloated with extra skin and bags hiding the beauty of the eyes. Gravity causes jowls to create a thicker appearance to the face, and sagging skin and fat in the neck destroy the youthfulness that people still feel, but do not see reflected in the mirror anymore. As people are living longer and healthier lives, they often want a younger appearance to match the way that they feel. Cosmetic surgery for aging faces is not only a commonly accepted remedy, it offers a number of options from which people can choose.

Eyelid surgery to remove the excess skin and bags around the eyes is probably the best money spent, as people look one another in the eyes first. It also is relatively painless and has a fast recovery time. Facelifts are a more expensive and bigger surgery with longer recovery, but are necessary for correcting jowls and excess fat and skin under the chin. Laser surgery (or a chemical peel) is best for correcting wrinkled skin, especially around the eyes and lips.   Botox injection is wonderful for forehead frown lines and can literally be done on lunch break.

Included below is a list of some of the more common procedures we offer along with a brief discussion of the procedure and some before and after photographs.  The patient photographs shown are with their gracious consent given in order to help others in their choices.

If you think an improved appearance would make you feel better, get several opinions from physicians who do facial plastic surgery and then decide what is best for you.
