Risks and Complications

Each and every option on cosmetic procedures has its own risks of potential complications that vary with the procedure. While major complications and bad results are very rare, they still can occur even under the most expert care. Most problems fortunately are minor and either resolve spontaneously with time or require minor revisions to correct. Even these are infrequent, but are best handled when there is open communication, patience, trust, and respect that is mutually shared between the patient and physician.

Botox

Botox is a treatment during which an injection is made in persistent lines in the face. This helps smooth out deep creases caused by contraction of facial muscles. A few tiny injections are made over a 10-minute period of time and these injections relax the muscle tension and consequently efface the lines. The effect is usually noted in 1-4 days. Botox has been widely tested for a number of years and we, at the Ear, Nose and Throat & Facial Plastic Surgery clinic, have been using Botox as a cosmetic treatment since 1997. Botox is approved by the FDA for use in cosmetic procedures. Botox is not incisional surgery or cosmetic surgery in the usual manner, since there are no incisions, no sutures are used and only minute injection of fluid, using very small needles is administered. Botox will last approximately 3-4 months and can be repeated since there are no long term or permanent complications from the use of Botox. In fact, one of the drawbacks of Botox is that it is not permanent.

It is important to remember that Botox is a chemical poison, but it is used in such minute dosage that it would take over 50 times the amount used for cosmetic reasons in humans to cause death in a small mouse. The most common place to use Botox cosmetically is in the deep furrows between the eyebrows. These furrows make people look mean or tired or angry. Botox will smooth these lines and prevent the deep furrows that occur by constant contraction of the muscles in the brow area.

Is Botox right for you? Only a Botox consultation with your physician will decide if you are an appropriate candidate for Botox injections. We here at the Ear, Nose and Throat & Facial Plastic Surgery, P.A. have over five years experience using Botox for cosmetic reasons.
