Chin Augmentation
The chin is typically not one of the main facial features considered
for attractiveness. It is, however, a critical counterbalance to the
nose and forehead in defining one’s profile. A weak or under projected
chin makes the nose look larger and draws attention to itself and away
from the other facial features that generally determine attractiveness.
Restoring chin projection in line with the head and upper lip creates a
healthier, more natural look that most people find pleasing.
This is most easily done by inserting a biocompatible implant over the
bone. This is done through a small incision either just under the chin
or inside the mouth at the bottom of the lower lip. A pocket is created
over the bone, the implant inserted, and the incision closed. The only
thing remotely difficult about the procedure is deciding how big of an
implant is needed and making sure that it does not heal crooked. If the
implant becomes infected, displaced, or simply disliked, it can be
removed.
Another method of increasing chin projection is often used by oral
surgeons. They cut a wedge of bone through an incision in the mouth,
slide the bone forward, and then secure the new position with small
screws.
All chin surgery procedures are done as an outpatient. Recovery is fast
and easy and usually requires a taped bandage to be worn a few days.
This is an especially effective procedure when done with a rhinoplasty
to reduce a large nose. It also tends to create a better angle with the
neck, which creates a thinner look. In the right person, chin
augmentation can make a really nicely improved profile.
