Sinus Trouble

Most people in South Mississippi understand “sinus trouble.” Sinus problems occur throughout the year, but seem to magnify themselves during the spring months when the pollen is high (trees and grass are pollinating); and also in the fall months when ragweed is very prevalent. It is also common during the winter months when viral infections are quiet common. If you notice the association above, you will notice that sinus problems are usually associated with allergy and viral infections. Other allergies play a part in “sinus trouble” as well as other conditions. Nasal difficulty with breathing due to deviated septum or nose lining hypertrophy are common denominators for sinus trouble. Patients that have had previous nose injuries, previous problems with using over-the-counter nose sprays, and allergies frequently experience sinus trouble.

Sinus problems seem to create a problem during various periods of life. They are common in mid-childhood, sometime between 5 and 10 years of age, then again in mid-adult life. This seems to be associated with the peak in nasal trauma and in allergy problems. Physicians usually diagnose sinusitis or sinus problems when the condition is associated with a bacterial infection. Usually a bacterial infection is diagnosed when there is fever, pain and tenderness, general malaise or a feeling of being excessively tired. Other symptoms are stuffiness in nose and nasal drainage, either blowing it out of the nose or post-nasal drainage. Treatment of sinusitis is based on the underlying cause or a combination of causes, that is: treatment of allergy, treatment of infection and treatment of nasal airway obstruction. This necessitates using medicines, allergy intervention and surgery. Not all methods of treatments are used in every patient. A combination of these methods is usually indicated.
